the 8th Psalm : Daily in the Psalms Morning Devotional

Daily in the Psalms : Psalm 8

O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. Psalms 8:1-2

Every Christian ought to do as David does here and take time to stop and consider the Glory of God. I know that the Glory of God is something that none of us could ever fully know or explain, but we can stop and consider it. It is hard for me to imagine that the God of Heaven would consider me. He does that in spite of all my sin and failure. The least I could do is consider Him in His perfection and Glory.

Maybe this is why we are so ungrateful and so unconcerned about God and the things of God, we never take time to consider and appreciate His Glory. Think about that phrase, ďThy Name!Ē The first step to true worship of God is to realize how unworthy we are to even utter His Name. That Name identifies the God of Heaven, the One that created the world and all that is in the world, the One that created you and I. It is much more than a Name; it is an excellent Name. The Psalmist asked a question for which there is no answer. He asks, ďHow excellent is Thy Name?Ē More excellent that you or I could ever know. We speak to God and speak about God so many times without ever realizing who we are really talking to or about. When you consider His Excellent Name, you will not use that Name in vain, you will not take Him lightly and you will not keep yourself from worshipping Him. The songwriter said, ďWhat a lovely Name.Ē But it is so much more than just a lovely name. Itís an excellent Name, a Name that is far above the heavens. The Palmist addresses God is two ways here. He says that God is His Lord and he also says that God is the Lord of everyone, Our Lord. He is doing his best to acknowledge that he knows that the One he is speaking to is greater than all. He made us, He protects us, He provides for us, and He takes special care of us. All that is in this world points to a God that is above the world. A God worthy to be praised! His Name is great, itís illustrious, itís magnificent, itís majestic, itís excellent, itís above all the earth. The light of His Name shines everywhere:

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead... (Romans 1:20).

Every language and every tongue can speak that Name. But, though everyone may speak that Name, there is none greater than that Name. His Name is set above the Heavens. While we can only speak that Name, call on that Name and trust in that Name, those in Heaven can actually see that Name. But His Name is even above their praise and adoration. That Name identifies the rightful owner and ruler of the universe. When we think that He is our Lord, we have to appreciate Him and His glory.

Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. Psalms 8:2

The Glory of God, His very Name, speaks of strength. He ordained strength, He establishes strength and He perfects strength. The Psalmist brings that unimaginable strength down to a personal and intimate level. He calls our attention to the special and loving care that God takes for His creation. Weather it be humans or animals, the love and care of God is evident as they come into this world. God shows us our weakness and our great need for Him and His strength. The very fact that every creature on this earth does not die as soon as it is brought forth from the womb shows the care and strength of God. This mighty God can show His strength in the weakest infant and He can defeat His strongest enemy. When we think about the fact that the Lord tells us that we can only know the Lord as we become as little children, weak and unable to defend ourselves. That is because He wants to show His great strength. He does show that strength and we place our faith in Him and the enemy is defeated. How much we are to appreciate the fact the God uses something as weak and frail as us to become instruments of His great power, He gives us His strength to still the enemy.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28).

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-39).

It all begins with that Excellent Name. Do you have real appreciation for His Majestic and Mighty Name?

Sometimes the way things are expressed by the human tongue donít come out just right. The headlines below remind us that we often have difficulty expressing ourselves.

If we have difficulty expressing the most simple thoughts, how could we ever hope to express our thought concerning the glory of God? Although it may be an impossible task, we are to do our best every day. The more we do it, the better we will do it. God expects our lips to praise Him and that praise ought to grow daily in its intensity.

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. Psalms 8:3-8

We have considered His Name, now letís consider His Heavens:

His Magnitude - Think about the beauty of the Heavens, all that has gone through your mind as you gazed up into that breathless creation. As you consider all the words that have been spoken about them and all the songs that have been written understand that God did it all with His fingers. The stars that cannot be numbered, the sunset that cannot be duplicated, the moon, the clouds, the sun; everything that you have ever seen was placed there to reveal God to you and cause you to admire Him. He did not do those things for Himself; He did them for us. I donít understand how anyone could be an unbeliever after they have scanned the Heavens and considered the work of His fingers. Every time the sun comes up in the morning, it is to put on a display the magnitude of our God. Every time the moonlight glistens in the night, it is to reveal the magnitude of our God. One of the duties of man is to admire his God. How sad that we neglect that duty. What a shame that we are warmed by the rays of His sun and cooled by midst of His night and we find no time to admire Him. That is what sets us apart from the beast of this world. They are made to almost always look downward. Man is made to look up, to admire his creator. No animal has ever looked upon the sun with admiration or has ever enjoyed a walk in the moonlight with those he loves. God reserved those emotions for us, that we might experience them and admire the One that made them possible. One of manís greatest inventions in the light bulb, but when compared to Godís sun, we want to cry out with the Psalmist, ďWhat is man, that thou art mindful of him?Ē God made all of the Heavens and its beauty, just so we could look up and enjoy it. That same God knew that we would be mean and disrespectful and neglectful of our duty to admire Him, yet He has never taken any of those wonderful things away from us. The sun shone on the darkest heathen today and the light of Godís moon reflects off the face of the most wicked man tonight. How could God be mindful of any of us? Yet, we are so ready to complain and blame God when things are not exactly as we want them to be. That is sad proof that we admire ourselves more than we admire Him

Here is a quote I found that will give us a little encouragement to stay on the old paths:

The new views are not the old truth in a better dress, but deadly error with which we can have no fellowship.

I donít want to fall in love with this world or the things of this world; I want to fall completely in love with the Lord and have that love burn in my heart all the days of my life.

His Manifestation - Listen to this great truth! Man is closely connected to the earth, for he was created out of the dust. He is connected to the beast of the earth, because like them he is born to die. But God has placed in man an immortal soul and will never die. He may be connected to the earth and the animals, but he is not kin to them. He is closely kin to the angels, just a little lower than them. We may be trapped in this house of clay, but our soul is bound for the place of Godís Glory. Many are concerned if their pet will be in Heaven and they are never concerned about the fact that God has chosen to manifest His Glory in them. I am not like a dog, I am a child of the resurrection, I am going to live forever because of the manifestation of the God of Glory. The Palmist reminds us that although there is a vast different in man and God, God has still crowned him with glory and honor. God has given us dominion over all of this earth. Donít miss that. Consider all the works of His hands and then admire the fact that He has given you the dominion over it all. Man can be ruled by God and God will make him fit to rule the earth. God says that it is His desire to crown man with glory, we must not forfeit or tarnish that crown by not having admiration for Him. God tells man, the creature just a little lower than the angels, ďAs long as I am your Lord, you can be lord of this earth.Ē Every time you consider a beast that man has tamed and uses for his own pleasure, you ought to consider that it was Godís plan that we be under His Lordship, just as He allows those beasts to be under ours. We do not serve God because He forces us to, we serve Him because we admire Him and appreciate Him.

But there is another reason we serve Him. He allowed His Precious Son to become as we are, lower than the angels. To become as we are and suffer for us, that we might become as He is.

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. (Hebrews 2:9).

How could we not admire a God that would send His Son to be humbled and die for our sins? God says, ďI crowned you as lord of this earth just because you are a human being, but when you become a Christian, I crown you again. I give you my Son, the Lord of all things. No wonder the Psalmist says that His Name is excellent!

O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Psalms 8:9

The Psalmist reminds us again that His Name is an excellent Name. He says that the Lord is His Lord and Our Lord. It is nothing but the Grace of God that allows us to own Him as our Lord. He is far above us, yet he is our Lord. He is far more righteous than any of us, yet He is our personal Lord. We have heard it said many times, ďLord, we just canít thank you enough.Ē How true that is, all we can do is adore Him. How long has it been since you just spend time adoring Him? We adore our mates, our little children, and many adore their possessions, but what about the Lord?

His Grace gave you Life.
His Grace gives you breath every day.
His Grace gave you the opportunity to be saved.
His Grace keeps you saved.
His Grace will allow you into Heaven, the place of His Glory.

Listen to these words: Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt, Yonder on Calvaryís mount out-poured, there where the blood of the lamb was spilt.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide, what can avail to wash it away? Look! there is flowing a crimson tide, will you this moment His grace receive?

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, freely bestowed on all who believe, You that are longing to see His face, will you this moment His grace receive?

Grace, grace, Godís grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within, Grace, grace, Godís grace, grace that is greater than all our sin.

What adoration we owe for His marvelous grace! All of this earth is a testimony of Godís Glory. If rightly viewed, He shines for all to see. It is true that His Glory is incomprehensible and infinite, but we can get a glimpse of it today. Letís praise His Name; Itís majesty and might. Letís consider His Heavens; itís magnitude and manifestation. Letís adore His Grace. And letís see His Glory.

In the politically correct world that we are living in today, it seems that many of Godís people have forgotten or have rejected the fact that we are victorious in Him. Because we have not seen many victories and because we fail to give thanks for the ones that we have seen, we are becoming victims instead of victors.

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. Romans 8:37

Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. 2Corinthians 2:14
