Daily in the Psalms : Psalm 42 THE DISQUIETED SOUL As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Psalms 42:1-11 We live in days when many people make several professions of faith, seemingly never getting their eternal salvation settled. Some, no doubt have made false professions and need to truly get born again, but many of these "repeaters" are saved people who are not properly taught or dealt with when they have doubts. Many times a Pastor will say, "Let's just settle it right now: pray and ask Jesus to forgive you and save you and nail it down at this point in your life." If they are already saved, this brings about confusion. They later look back and say, "Was I saved the first time, or, maybe it was the second or third time." Many times that little nagging doubt is just simply the result of a disquieted soul. I believe that a child of God can seriously doubt his or her salvation and the only way to get it settled is in the Word of God. “DISQUIETED” means “To disturb; to deprive of peace, rest or tranquility; to make uneasy or restless; to harass the body; to fret or vex the mind. Make uneasy or restless; disturbed; harassed.” David said that loving God’s Word brings great peace (Psalm 119:165). We must be careful that we do not fall out of love with God’s word. When we do: Many Christians Doubt Their Relationship With The Lord They Feel That Little Nagging Tug At The Heart Though They Know That They Have Accepted Christ There Is A Restlessness In Their Soul That Often Becomes Mis-Interpreted Oft Times, They are Caught Up In an Endless Line of Empty Professions The Result: A Loss of Joy And Usefulness David’s love for God’s Word produced a saved man - panting and thirsting after God. A faithful man - To the house of God. A praising man - praising in worship. A consistent man - praising in the midst of problems. A comforted man - lovingkindness ... in the night his song. A praying man - in the daytime and in the night. An understanding man - God my rock. Disquieting of the soul leads to questions - "When shall I come and appear before God?" "Where is thy God?" “Why hast thou forgotten me?” "Where is thy God?" Questions easily answered in the Word of God. Without the Word we will go from panting after God to crying without God. We will go from remembering the blessings of God to being caught up in the billows and waves of this life. Stay in the Word every day and know the cure of the disquieted soul! What Causes A Disquieted Soul Disappointments (Unbelief) Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. (Mark 9:23-24). My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long? (Psalms 6:3). How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? (Psalms 13:1). Personal failures (Sin) Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. (Psalms 51:12). Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? (Psalms 85:6). Unforgiveness (Bitterness) And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. (Mark 11:25-26). Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; (Hebrews 12:14-15). Feelings (Lack of Joy) Caused By Sin Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. (Psalms 51:12). Caused By Not Communing With The Lord Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. (Psalms 16:11). Caused By Chastisement For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. (Psalms 30:5). Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. (Psalms 51:8).
