Daily in the Psalms : Psalm 33
psalms 33THE CHARACTER OF OUR WORSHIPRejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. Psalms 33:1-3 Worship Is Our Joy What a joy it is to know that the Lord accepts us, saves us, and gives us a new heart. Besides being the right thing to do, it is the joy of the Christian to worship Him. Worship Is Our Duty The character of the redeemed ought to be one of worship. Too many times we forget this one very important duty. Some even resist it because they don’t think it is spiritual, but it is one of the most spiritual things we can do. Those that claim to be upright (Spiritual) ought to praise the Lord! Worship and praise done by those that are not saved make them look foolish. That is why so much of the so-called worship in the modern Church is foolish nonsense. Lives that dishonor God will always pervert worship. The Bible speaks of holy hands as well as a holy heart. The righteous are the only ones qualified to praise Him. Those that have experienced the unmerited favor of a Holy God have the obligation to worship Him. He has forgiven our sins and given us a new and right heart. Worship ought to be our natural response to His grace and mercy. As we know God is working in our lives and as we daily receive goodness from His hand, it is only right that we should spend a portion of each day praising Him. Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. Psalms 68:19 Worship Is Our Noble Practice This is the first time in the Book of Psalms that musical instruments are mentioned. These instruments are used to accompany the voices of God’s people as they worship Him. Sometimes the human tongue cannot find the words to express its desire and devotion to the Lord and these instruments are used to add expressions and sweetness to our worship. They are never to take away from the “New Song” that God places in the heart of the believer and they are never to make that “New Song” resemble the old songs of the world. The song and the music are to express our love and appreciation for the marvelous work of God in our lives and in the world around us. That is why the Psalmist stresses the point that they are to be played skillfully. It is not to just be a loud noise, but a joyful and careful sound to God. Our whole heart ought to be thrown into it, but remember, we have a new heart in Him. While there may be different voices and different instruments, there must always be one spirit. We need to sing the same kinds songs and hymns that Christians have always sang, but there needs to be new freshness because God is always doing a new and fresh work in our lives. The “New Song” means that it is different from what we sang before we were saved, not something that is different from what God has always placed in the heart of the redeemed. It should reflect our highest efforts. We should always give our very best to God. Worship ought to be the center of our Church services, but each individual Christian must take part in it. No Christian should be a spectator when it comes to worshipping the Lord THE REASON FOR WORSHIP For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth. He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD: and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works. There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee. Psalms 33:4-22 Verse four begins with the word “For.” This indicates that the reasons for worship are now given. The “WORD” of God is the promise and the “WORK” of God is the performance of that Word. His Words are what reveals God to man. They not only tell us of all that God has done, but they also tell us the purpose of what He has done. As we look at His creation and read of it in His Word, we are overwhelmed at His righteousness and goodness. The perfect order of the universe did not just happen; God spoke it into existence. His Work and His Word compels us to worship Him. As we see nature, we are also overwhelmed with fear. That is the design of God’s work. He is a powerful God, therefore worthy of our worship. The Heavens and the earth are but a stage upon which our God displays Himself. As we see His might and power, let us bow before Him is true worship. God is a mighty and powerful God, but His power has a purpose. His hand controls all that happens. Verse four begins with the word “For.” This indicates that the reasons for worship are now given.
