Daily in the Psalms : Psalm 26

psalms 26

Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide. Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart. Psalms 26:1-2

What is integrity? In the context of this lessons, it means, ďWholeness, entireness or in an unbroken state.Ē According to the dictionary, it means, ďEntire, genuine, the unimpaired state of any thing, moral soundness or purity.Ē When we speak of integrity, we usually are making reference to the whole moral character.

There are only two men in the Bible of which it is said that they had integrity, Job and David.

Concerning Job:

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. (Job 2:3).

His wife said:

Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die. (Job 2:9).

Concerning David:

Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide. (Psalms 26:1).

This might sound like boasting, but letís see what God had already said:

And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments: (1 Kings 9:4).

David committed the judgment of his integrity to the Lord:

He knew how he had walked.

He said that because he had trusted in the Lord, he would not slide.

For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth. I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers. I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked. I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD: Psalms 26:3-6

I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. Psalms 101:2

Davidís walk was in truth, his companions were Godly, his behavior was honorable, his love was for the House of God and his heart was perfect. Integrity is not what you have to do because others are watching or because you are forced to. It is what and who you are on your own. Your integrity is reflected in your walk.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. Psalms 1:1

We need to rid ourselves of vain persons, those that are empty of spiritual things, worthless of spiritual actions, and having no substance when it comes to spiritual truth. David had a testimony of integrity because his associations were people of integrity:

I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts. Psalms 119:63

We also need to rid ourselves of those that are dissemblers, those that are hypocrites and pretenders. These are those that say, ďI love you,Ē but never prove it. They say ďI love God,Ē but they are not faithful and loyal to Him.

Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 2 Timothy 3:5

...he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding. Proverbs 12:11

Many donít have spiritual understanding because of their associations. There is no way to hang around those that are evil and remain spiritual:

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. 1 Corinthians 15:33

Then, we need to rid ourselves of the wicked, those that are hostile to God, those that are guilty of willful sin:

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person. Psalms 101:3-4

This is a simple truth that so many refuse to see, we have a society of people with no integrity because they will not hold their associations to a high standards. My Dad told me a long time ago, ďSon, if you lay down with the dogs you will get up with fleas

6 I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD: 7 That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. 8 LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth. (Psalms 26:6-8).

1 Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. 2 Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. 3 They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways. (Psalms 119:1-3).

I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. (Psalms 86:12).

We have so much ungodly worship today because we have so much ungodly living. Holiness and real worship are Divinely connected and cannot be separated. Also we have worldly and ungodly worship today because the worshippers have no purpose. In fact most shun real purpose, they shun the Bible, doctrine, and the Church. Just any old Bible will not give you purpose, you must have Godís Word to have Godís purpose. Worship is always initiated and controlled by the Church. Those that think little of the Church will think nothing of perverting worship. The Word of God and the Church lead us to honor God, when worship is outside the influence of those two, it will have no integrity.

We've traveled together through life's rugged way,
O'er land and over water, by night and by day:
To travel without it I never would try,
We keep close together, my Bible and I.

In sorrow I've proved it my comfort and joy,
When weak my strong tower which nought can destroy;
When death comes so near me 'tis thought I would die,
We still are together, my Bible and I.

If powers of evil against me would come,
And threaten to rob me of heaven and home,
God's Word then directs me to Him in the sky;
And nothing can part us, my Bible and I

When evil temptations are brought to my view,
And I in my weakness know not what to do,
On Christ as my strength I am taught to rely;
And so we keep company, my Bible and I.

When life's path is ended; if Jesus should come
and take all His blood-purchased children home;
Or if, in long suffering, He waits till I die,
We'll never be parted, my Bible and I.

And when in the glory my Lord I behold,
with all His redeemed gathered safe in the fold,
My Bible and I close companions will be
For God's Word abides for all eternity!

9 Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men: 10 In whose hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes. 11 But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me. 12 My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the LORD. (Psalms 26:9-12).

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, (2 Corinthians 6:17).

Davidís separation effected his desire and his discernment. All you have to do is look around at those that have no separation and you will find that they have the wrong desires and they have no discernment. He made decisions based on his integrity, who his friends would be, where he would go and how he would act. When you leave this place and meet the people out in the world, we will see how sincere your integrity is. Our integrity is what brings us deliverance, from habits, associates, and actions that are not pleasing to God. It led him in the right path, gave boldness to his speech, secured his feet and brought blessings from the Lord. The reason we have so many weak, confused, fearful and defeated people in the Church today is because they have little or no integrity.

Integrity is something that we purpose in our hearts. You will not have integrity unless you purpose in your heart to get it and keep it.

...till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me. (Job 27:5).

Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee. (Psalms 25:21).

There are many things and people in this world that will fail us, but Godly integrity will preserve us. Our integrity is what will help us face the end of our lives with no regrets. Integrity will please us and God. We are not to seek to have integrity for show, but to please God and secure His blessings and protection.

The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. (Proverbs 11:3).

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him. (Proverbs 20:7).

We have a generation of cursed children because they do not have the promise of their parentís integrity. I am watching some darken the future of their children because they do not have the Godly integrity they need. God help us to have what David had and stand where David stood:

11 But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me. 12 My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the LORD. (Psalms 26:11-12).

Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide. (Psalms 26:1).

The Christian life is more than just believing in Jesus, itís complete trust in Him, in all things and for all things. There are many times in the Christian life when we will have the opportunity to prove our integrity. Troubles and trials will come, there will be times when we simply donít understand, that is when we walk by faith. I believe the reason many do not have Godly integrity is because they do not trust God. If they canít see it or explain it, they just will not accept it. The Christian that is constantly questioning God will not have integrity.

5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Too many want to be in control, they want to dictate to God. That is not integrity; that is disrespect. God does all things well and those with integrity will walk in complete faith in Him. If we understood everything, there would be no need to trust Him. God allows us to walk through some dark places sometimes so we will know that He is worthy of our trust. Notice, that we are to trust and acknowledge Him BEFORE He will direct our paths. That is putting our faith in action; that is Christian integrity.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6).

God rewards and is pleased with Christian integrity. Faith is what makes it possible to please the Lord. Again, doing right when you know how it will turn out is not faith. Doing right, no matter what, is faith. The habit of doing that all the time is integrity.

Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart. (Psalms 26:2).

Integrity is the ability to invite God to examine our walk to see if it is a walk of obedience. Many Christians donít like to prove their obedience. They compare their lives with others, usually those that are worse than themselves. They make excuses, they blame others, etc. But those with integrity will not compare, excuse or blame; they will simply obey. And they have no problem with God or others examining them. There are many that claim to be saved, yet they donít want to obey, so they make up their own rules or change Godís rules. They seek out changed Bibles, compromising Churches, and disobedient leaders. Those with no integrity will seek out others with no integrity. The no-integrity road is always an easier road to travel.

4 I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers. 5 I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked. (Psalms 26:4-5).

Again, this is not a popular subject and many donít want to hear it from the pulpit. They have aligned themselves with those that are immoral and they have no intention of separating. If you do not have enough integrity to have the right friends, what kind of friends will your Children have? Our associations outside of the Church will always effect what happens inside the Church. That is why we have so much compromising in the Church today. Too many are influenced by or worried about their vain associates. There are too many that talk the Christian talk but their walk is different from their talk. They claim to love God and the Church but they live contrary to the Bible and apart from the Church. We have filled our Churches with fake Christians and we wonder why there is no life-changing power. There are many Independent Baptist Churches that are led by those that are members of secret organizations such as the Masons. I will not go into it here, but these organizations are contrary to the Bible and Christian principles. Those that have secrets are usually dishonest. If the leaders of the Church conducted their business like the Masons conduct theirs, we would be attacked and accused of all kinds of evil. Yet, those that would lead the charge think nothing of having those things in their personal life. What the Church needs more that anything is members that seek to have integrity.

10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. 11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: 12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: 13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: 14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: 16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. 18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. (Proverbs 1:10-19).

What I see going on in many Churches today is a far cry from the result of integrity. It is the result of a bunch of worldly Christians that are bringing their worldly influence into the Church and it will not mix with Christian spirituality and integrity. We must not be enticed by the music, dress, habits, pleasures or worship of the ungodly. When they invite use to join up with them or to cast our lot among them, we must refuse. I want to have enough integrity to keep from being swallowed up by them. We will not walk in their way; our foot will not share their path. The evil, blood-shedding, vain, secretive, greedy ways of the ungodly is contrary to Christian integrity.

God help us to have a walk if integrity that is marked by separation.

I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD: (Psalms 26:6).

God help us to have enough integrity to be innocent. That must be the testimony of the Christian. Many will not come to Church or they claim not to like Church because they have no integrity and they are guilty. Conviction is never a pleasant thing, but a good testimony will ease the conviction.

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (James 4:7-10).

Integrity will enable you to say ďnoĒ to the Devil. Submitting to God comes before resisting the Devil. Those that do not submit to God will not have the integrity it takes to resist the Devil. God give us a testimony of closeness to God. That will give us clean hands, pure hearts and a single mind. The Christian should also have a good testimony during times of struggle and suffering. Integrity will humble us before God and He will life us up.

That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. (Psalms 26:7).

Confession means, ďspeaking.Ē Itís time that our lips lined up with the will of God. Our confession or conversation ought to be pleasing to God and it ought to be faithful to God. It is strange that some say that they canít speak about and for the Lord but they can talk about everything else in the world. The mouth of the Christian ought to be filled with the praises of and to God. We must begin to tell others about God and what He has done for us. The Bible says that our conversation is in Heaven; our integrity will make that conversation pleasing to Heaven. What we say with our mouth will effect what we do with our hands. Innocent hands will not be attached to a guilty mouth. The more you speak of Him, the less you will speak of yourself. The more you speak to Him, the less you will think of yourself. Thinking of ourselves is what causes us to lose our integrity. When our conversation is about Him, we will be thankful to Him.

14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. 15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. (Romans 1:14-15).

Christian integrity will give us lips that are filled with words to and about God. That is what Preaching is, every Christian can Preach the Gospel. It is integrity that makes us ready to Preach it.

LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth. (Psalms 26:8).

Christian integrity will make you love and be faithful to Church. We hold the world as a place of honor and neglect the House of God. Those with integrity know that there is no more honorable place than Church. We must desire to be where He is honored.

1 How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts! 2 My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. (Psalms 84:1-2).

The word ďamiableĒ means ďLovely, worthy of love, deserving of affection.Ē David had integrity that made him love the House of God. I wonder how many Church members today have a soul that longs for Church, even faints after it? If you are crying out for God, you will be in Church; that is where He has promised to meet with us. We are seeking programs, personality, and popularity, when what we really need is integrity that will make us faithful.

We have all heard the saying, ďBirds of a feather flock together.Ē Those that run with the unsteady will not walk in steadfastness. Let us seek to be among those with integrity, those that have a sure and even standing. Then, we will stand up in the Church and bless the Lord.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. (Psalms 40:2).

Some claim to be saved, but their goings are not established in the ways and Word of God. If it was God that brought you up out of the pit, He is the One that establishes your walk. The slippery walk of many in the Church today is a sad demonstration of the work of God.

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known. (Proverbs 10:9).

What does the world know about the Church today? They know about Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Baker, those that have perverted their ways. Itís time for them to see our integrity. Itís time for us to show them an upright and sure walk.
