Daily in the Psalms : Psalm 17

SAFE STEPS ON A DANGEROUS PATH

Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer. Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.
Psalms 17:4-5

These words come from one that felt that he could not hold himself up. The truth is, there is no man that can hold himself up. Some in the pride of their own heart, in the wit of their own mind, or the strength of their own selves may feel that they can, but they will soon find out that this life and its difficulties are too great for them. The Bible speaks of us falling short of God; that is because He is so perfect and high and we are born in the depths of sin and shame. Everything that is truly good is far out of our reach. Without the help of God we will quickly grow weak and weary. Many of the paths we will have to travel will be paths of suffering and will have to be trod with wounded and bleeding feet. On these rough paths many will faint and fall. What power can we possible have against the sickbed, sorrow, loss, or persecution? Again we will quickly lose our energy, peace, and hope. We all know those whose heart became discouraged because they tried to travel those paths without Godís strength, comfort, and guidance.

There are many times that we become so confused and doubtful that we just cannot find our way. We make wrong choices. The untried, strange, and dangerous road can cause a spirit of darkness to cover us. Many times we find ourselves taking that dreadful ďLeap in the dark.Ē If God does not come to lead the way, we will surely stumble and fall.

Sometimes we encounter slippery paths. Most of the time we encounter these paths in our youth, when we feel free. Temptation and Satanís strange deceiving light draws us to a path filled with death and darkness. We also encounter these paths in times of prosperity and worldly honor. Unless God comes to help us, we will slide into the abyss. It is then that only Godís hand can keep our feet from sliding.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Psalms 16:11

There is THE path of life and there are the many paths of destruction. Satan is always trying to draw us from the Kingís Highway onto his slimy road with pitfalls on both sides. We must call on the Lord to help us hold our reins high and keep our way sure.

The Sufficiency Of Godís Comfort

Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.
Psalms 119:117

There is no royal, sin-free road to Heaven, but there is a Royal Helper. Those that cling to Him will be safe. Godís Word assures us that He is able to make us stand:

ÖYea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
Romans 14:4

If we purpose in our hearts to live in the will of God, stay in His Church, and glorify Him with our lives, whenever we take a dangerous step, a Hand stronger that any other will preserve us and keep us safe.

On my path He firmly stands And for my life He truly cares Keeping me safe in His loving hands Secure forever my soul He bears

There Is Safety Only As We Rest In God

All other forms of security are only good while Godís hand secures them. Every promise made is of no value unless God brings them about. We can stand in Christ, but only in Him!

God Will Hold Us Up

He will not only pick us up when we fall, He will hold us up and keep us from falling!

We Are To Hold To His Word

We are preserved from falling by holding to His Word.

Öby the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.
Psalms 17:4

No matter what others may do or say, we have but one absolute guide and rule Ė GODíS WORD! His Word will hold our steps fast and we shall not be moved. That Word will show us the right path and keep us from the false paths. And it will give us strength to choose and walk the right path.

God Does Not Condone Carelessness Or Laziness

If God promises to hold us up, we have something to do; we must hold to Him! Holding to Godís Hand is our highest calling and it takes careful thought, tireless effort, and unceasing prayer.

SPECIAL NEED Ė SPECIAL HELP

Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings, From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about. They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly. They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth; Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places. Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword: From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.
Psalms 17:7-14

Special Need

The Psalmist calls for God to extend to him extraordinary grace. He was in particular need because of the sheer number and character of his enemies. They were many, they were deadly, and they were filled with hate and pride. They also had the goal of utter destruction. All of us will find ourselves in these situations. We will get into deep waters, face cloudy skies, and sometimes have to pass through the fire. Our troubles may become far more that we can possible overcome. That is when we must have Godís extraordinary grace, His marvellous lovingkindness, and His special mercy.

Special Help

It is in our times of deepest distress that we find the brightest visions of Godís love and power to save.

THAT IS WHEN WE FIND THAT WE ARE DEAR TO GOD

How precious is Godís eye and how carefully it guards us. We are never dearer to God than in the time we want Him most.

THAT IS WHEN WE FIND THAT WE ARE CLOSE TO GOD

How safe and secure are those under the shadow of His wings! We are covered and protected from our enemies, out of sight, covered from the rain, and warmed from the cold. In times of trouble, persecution, temptation, and suffering, God draws us close to Himself and under His wings we find wisdom, power, love, and safety.

THAT IS WHEN WE FIND THAT WE ARE THE HAPPIEST

There is a purpose for trials and trouble that we cannot see until we are safe under His wings. There is where we find our greatest joy.

For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
2Corinthians 1:5

Godís wing is as soft as it is strong and under His wing the sorrow is driven away and replaced by peace and Heavenly joy.

In times when my sorrows increase Are the times greatest joy is given Jesus comes to give His sweet peace And give me a little taste of Heaven

SANCTIFIED TRIAL

As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
Psalms 17:7-15

These verses show us the purifying and ennobling influences of sanctified trouble. The worldís prosperity degrades those who enjoy it, but the sanctified adversity of the saved lifts them.

Sanctified Sorrow Drives Us Closer To God

The persecution of Davidís enemies drove him into the blessedness of Godís arms. Just as an abused child will run home to their parents, the persecuted child of God runs to his Heavenly Father. When we are wronged by the world, attacked by Satan, and overcome by lifeís storms, we seek a closer relationship with God and find a sweet balm for our soul. When we are wronged by men or Satan, we can flee to God and find in His embrace the love that atones for any dishonor or injury. His love will always fill us with strength and gladness.

Sanctified Sorrow Leads Us To A More Spiritual Life

The Psalmist finds a new and deeper appreciation of his relationship with God because of all the treasures God gives. In the midst of trouble he realizes an even closer walk with God. If he had been left to a life of ease, he might have become lazy or careless and fallen victim to temptation.

Sanctified Sorrow Awakens Us To Our Desire For Heaven

The trouble of the Psalmist takes his eyes off of and loosens his grip from the world. He begins to look toward Heaven. There is a danger of obtaining worldly influence and pleasure; it may cause us to forget our great inheritance.

MEN OF THE WORLD

Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword: From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes. Psalms 17:13-14

They have made this world their home and are resting in that which will pass away. They live and strive for that which is visible. Their pain and pleasure, hope and fear, loss or gain, all are connected to this world. They live for the present. Their attachment is to that which is outward, temporary, and many times unreal. The opposite is true for Godís people; our attachment is to that which is inward, eternal, and true. Men of the world love the near and low instead of the distant and high.

They seek enough for themselves. They have enough for their children. They set their whole heart on their prosperity. They have no moral standard to check their quest for more.

There are some that see worldly prosperity as a sign of Godís favor, but that is rarely the case. God raises His hand against the worldly and will eventually smite them unless they repent. They may experience some carnal contentment, but true satisfaction comes only through righteousness. The men of the world may obtain precious things, pleasures, honors, and riches, but their spirit is desolate and unsatisfied. The things of this world will pass away, but Godís inheritance is forever.

SATISFACTION

As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
Psalms 17:15

The nature of true satisfaction is spiritual. The Psalmist says that satisfaction is not external or physical; itís internal and spiritual. It is not in social rank, intelligence, culture, people, or things. It is not of the senses, but of the spirit.

The nature of true satisfaction is complete. Spiritual satisfaction is the gratification of the whole being.

The nature of true satisfaction is full. The whole nature is fully blessed. The Bible says those that know spiritual satisfaction will hunger no more, neither do they thirst anymore.

The nature of true satisfaction is everlasting. The Psalmist is looking to a time of endless blessedness. The inheritance of the worldly ends when he dies, but the inheritance of the spiritual flows forever more.

The Source Of True Satisfaction

ďAs for me, I will behold thy face.Ē The Knowledge of God, His goodness, His wisdom, and His beauty are the source of our satisfaction. To know Him, His Law, and His love gives us overflowing and everlasting gladness. To know Jesus, who is the Brightness of the Fatherís glory, is the secret of satisfaction. We are not to place satisfaction as something we can only obtain in the future. By the grace of Christ, we can attain power over sin; we can fix our heart on Him and experience joy that flows from the fountain of God.
