Daily in the Psalms : Psalm 15 A GLAD SONG OF MORAL PURITY LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved. Psalms 15:1-5 This Psalm teaches us the absolute necessity of moral purity as the condition of God’s protection and provision. The great question is, “Who will be accepted by God?” The “Holy Hill” is a reference to the place where God dwells. It is the place where one can have intimate communion with God and receive His favor. Who can be God’s friend and enjoy His protection and provision? This is the question that must be asked by every man with great interest and urgency. It is not a question of how man, but a question of “What must I do to be saved?” The answer is not in our nationality, not in our suffering, and not in our social standing. It is not in our education, and not in our religious affiliation. The answer is in our walk (Relationship) with God. A person is not a child of God because of any outward work, but because of the work that God does in the heart. That relationship will produce some outward evidence. We call that evidence, holiness. Our holiness or righteousness is in God, not in any human accomplishment. God requires that which is beyond our ability: HE REQUIRES PERFECTION “He that walketh uprightly” GOD REQUIRES WORKS “and worketh righteousness” GOD REQUIRES SPIRITUALITY “and speaketh the truth in his heart” These requirements are so perfect, so profound, that it is impossible for any man to meet them, except by virtue of the grace and strength of the Lord Jesus Christ. That God for His unspeakable gift! MORALITY LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved. Psalms 15:1-5 The course, action, and speech of our life must be right. God wants us to be free from evil habits, evil works, and evil words. Notice that gross sins are not included in these verses. It is just assumed that these are not present in the life of the Christian. The standard for the Christian is a very exalted one. The Psalmist recognizes that the source of our morality is God. In Him we find our example, our strength, and our goodness. The lofty morality that is required by these verses is far out of the reach of human capability. Only as we trust and rest in Him are we able to reach such a goal. We stand fast in God; nothing can cause His overthrow. MORALITY INCLUDES THE CONTROL OF THE TONGUE It includes the slander that originates with us, that which is only repeated by us, and that which is listened to by us. The talebearer carries the Devil in his tongue; the tale-hearer carries him in his ear. We are not to bring any harm to our neighbor. It brings unhappiness to the one that is slandered and the one that commits it. Rare is the cure for the bite of the busy-body’s tongue. The Bible says that it is set on fire of Hell. While it may be a most difficult thing, we must rule our tongue and refrain from evil speaking. What is the cure for all the sins of the tongue? “He that … speaketh the truth in his heart” The person whose heart seeks only truth will have no part with what is false. God must change and enlighten our heart. Only out of a pure fountain will flow a pure stream. God help me never to speak one evil word Or one that is rash, idle, or unkind Please give me the grace Oh Lord That in my heart truth you will find Forgive me and make me whole Every evil thought remove Perfect my heart; protect my soul That I may show your love
