GIVE ME THAT OLD TIME RELIGION Part 3

All of that is the result of the wrong Authority. I must remind you again that the Church is not ours, it belongs to God and we have no right to hand over itís authority to anyone but Him. Not only is He the owner, the Church is His heritage.

For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:23-27

The Church is never to be accountable to the people, it is accountable only to itís Owner and Head, Christ! We are to submit to Him in all areas of faith and practice. That Old Time Religion calls for what God calls for, we are to die to our own will and live in complete submission to His will.

The message of the modern Church is a social gospel and a politically correct message. The Bible message has been changed and corrupted to the point that it is worthless. Now the Church Preaches a worldly psychology message that makes people feel better in their sin.

The day that Paul warned us of is now here and many Pastors are afraid to Preach the Word, they are willing to say whatever the people want to hear. All they are concerned about is nickels and noses.

That Old Time Religion Preaches a confrontational Gospel that is hated by the world, especially those that refuse to subject themselves to Godís Authority. They reject the sting of conviction and are looking for the soothing words of compromise.

Most today are rejecting any message that confronts their compromised ideas and inclusion philosophy. Itís time for those that Preach, practice, and promote That Old Time Religion to state their doctrinal stands without apology and never change their message to make it more acceptable to the unspiritual.

There are many things in the Bible that are distasteful to the human flesh, but we are not to ignore or change them to please the modern society. The Word of God must be Preached with power and conviction; thatís Old Time Religion!

Every message from our pulpits and every lesson taught in our Sunday School classes must be Biblical and doctrinally sound. There will be some that do not like it, but we are to obey and please God rather than men:

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1Corinthians 1:18-21

That Old Time Religion must have as its main goal to lift up Jesus, the Cross, the never-changing Gospel, and the whole truth of Godís Word. That truth may not always be men pleasing, but it is always life changing!

We must always strive to have the presence and power of the Holy Ghost in our midst. Compromise and modernism quenches the Spirit.

Quench not the Spirit. 1Thessalonians 5:19

Instead of quenching the Spirit, we must be yielded and obedient to Him:

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Titus 2:11-13

When we are obedient to and yielding to the Spirit, we will grow in grace and be conformed to the image of Christ. The modern Church has changed itís course and is now on the road to pleasing men; that will cause them to crash into the ditch of sin every time.

Pleasing men will cause us to twist the Truth of Scripture to suit our own beliefs and feelings. As soon as that process begins, the Lord will depart.

As I have said already in this study, not only does modernism drive us away from the Word and the influence of the Spirit; it also drives us away from the Great Commission:

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:19-20

Soul winning and Missions are dying in the modern Church. Anything they have that they try to pass off as either, has a changed definition and does not follow the plan or command of Christ.

Jesus did not tell us to go and market our Church or Church programs. We are to take the Gospel message to every creature in every segment of our society and in every part of the world.

The modern Church has become interested in success that is defined by the worldís standards, not by Bible standards. If the world pleases the selfish desires of the flesh, then it is labeled a success. The Old Time Religion Church that seeks to please God alone is labeled a failure and no longer desirable.

Our task, as defined in the Bible, is not to protect and promote personalities and programs; we are to protect and promote the Word of God. We must lift it up, proclaim it faithfully, live it with great devotion, Preach it in power, and honor it above all else.

We have said so many times that it is our Final Authority, but it is much more; it is the very foundation of our faith and it is the bond that holds the Church together. There are so many different personalities in the Church and the only way we can ever hope to be one body, fitted together for Godís use, is to be bonded together by His Word.

While many Churches have abandoned their once strong bond to the Word, I know some that have a strong stand to the Word of God but have lost their love for Christ. Everything we do must be motivated by the love of Christ:

For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 2Corinthians 5:14

It was the love of Christ that caused Him to look down at dirty rotten sinners and pull them out of the miry clay and place them on the Solid Rock. Because He first loved us, we are to love Him and have that love evident in all we do.

No one in the Church should serve the Lord out of obligation or pressure. Every person in every ministry, no matter how large or small, must be motivated by the love of Christ. That will make us stick when others bail out. That will make us endure while others faint. When the love of Christ constrains us, we will serve Him gladly and continually.

The love of Christ changes everything in our life.

It gives us the grace we need to serve the Lord as well as men:

For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Galatians 5:13

Those that are constrained by His love will be ruled by His grace.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephesians 4:29

His love and grace causes us to live right, speak right, give right, and serve right. The modern Church speaks about love and grace, but there is very little evidence of it in their lives. His love and grace gives us great liberty, but not to live contrary to His Word.

Threats and guilt will not make people live better lives and serve the Lord in a greater way. That can only be accomplished by the love and grace of Christ.

Because That Old Time Religion is faithful to the Word and has the love and grace of God, we are much different than the modern Church. It ought not be difficult for anyone to see that difference.

OUR WORSHIP OUGHT TO LOOK DIFFERENT

The worship of the modern Church is all about feelings and the flesh. Itís all about entertainment rather than the presence and power of God. The worship of That Old Time Religion does not focus only on what happens in the so-called worship services; it also focuses on our daily walk with the Lord.

When the focus shifts to the Church service only, then we have to find ways to make it more and more exciting, because the rest of our lives are completely void of real worship. The Church service does have worship in it, but worship is only a part. Most of what happens in the Church services of Old Time Religion Church is the result of worship or in preparation of worship.

That is why we make Preaching and the teaching of the Word the main element of the service. The world has made music and entertainment to main element. That is why they have lost their way.

Our Preaching must be different. We are to hold to the sound doctrines of the Bible and challenge people to grow in Christ. The Preaching ought to affect the way people live. That means it will not always be exciting and pleasing.

Our music must be different. The modern Church places the emphasis on the performer and the performance. It usually has nothing to do with Bible doctrine or personal devotion. They sing about a Christ they do not serve and a Bible they do not obey.

That philosophy has crept into many Fundamental Baptist Churches. Musicians and singers perform in front of the crowd on Sunday, but they have no performance in their daily lives.

Singers that sing about souls that need to be saved ought to be soul-winners.
Singers that sing about loving Jesus ought to have evidence of that love in their lives.
Singers that sing of a changed life ought to have a changed life.
Singers that sing of serving the Lord ought to serve the Lord.

When those involved in our worship are not held to a Bible standard, then the worship will not hold to a Bible standard. Music is a tool, not the whole function. Music is to set the tone and open the heart for the rest of the service, the Preaching in particular.

Because of what the Church is and Who meets with us there, there are certain kinds of music and performers that do not belong there. The music MUST be spiritual, not worldly! Those that present the music and the special songs MUST be spiritual, not worldly!

The world will try to tell you that music is amoral and does not influence. They know that is a lie. The Devil uses it as a corrupting influence today and he always has. Why do you think the overwhelming majority of people flock to the modern Churches today; itís because of their music.

Many Fundamental Baptist Churches are following this trend. They donít seem to be able to draw a crowd to their Revival Meeting unless Music is billed as part of the program. Most of the time, that music is tainted with the worldís beat and the worldís message.

I love music and I believe it is a valuable part of worship, but we have to be careful that it does not quench the Spirit of God. That Old Time Religion has traditional music that is sacred and holy. The contemporary music in most Churches today has been influenced by the world and is a copy of what the heathen listen to:

Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. Jeremiah 10:2

There have been some that have come to our Church that I have stopped scheduling because they are leaning to the ways of the heathen. There are some that we have now that will soon be canceled because they are headed in that same direction. I am not interested in the old song of the world; I love the new song of the redeemed:

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. Psalms 40:1-3

The transformed life ought to seek transformed worship:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

OUR METHODS OUGHT TO LOOK DIFFERENT

We are not trying to compete with the world or imitate them. That Old Time Religion cannot fall for the ďAnything-to-get-a-crowdĒ methods. We cannot violate the Book! Old fashioned soul-winning and following Godís plan will work, if we are faithful.

OUR YOUTH PROGRAMS OUGHT TO LOOK DIFFERENT

That Old Time Religion does not have lock-ins and rock bands; we do not have worldly Youth Leaders that undermine what we stand for. Church is not to cater to the Youth; it is to cater to the Lord Jesus and His Word.

The modern Church is not sending their youth to Old Fashioned Bible Colleges, putting them on the Mission field, or placing them in full-time service for the Lord. That is because they are not taught to deny self and take up their cross for the Lord.

The Youth Programs of the modern Church have become the driving force and is changing the rest of the Church, leading them to compromise and worldliness. The opposite ought to be true. We are to reproduce ourselves in them:

Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. Philippians 4:9

We need men of God in our Youth Departments teaching the youth to ďdo what you see in me.Ē The emphasis needs to be on living a Godly lifestyle, winning others to Christ, and serving in the Church.

OUR STANDARDS OUGHT TO LOOK DIFFERENT

This is where many are not willing to pay the price for That Old Time Religion. Standards are not the main goal of the Church, but they are based on the principles of the Word of God. The standards of the Church are the reflection of Godís work in the lives of the Church members.

The modern Church tries to justify their lack of Bible standards by criticizing us and calling us names. They claim to want to be tolerant, but they will not tolerate Bible standards. That Old Time Religion has always stood for holiness and we must not relent now! That Old Time Religion ought to have different standards for conduct, appearance, speech, romance, service, worship, etc.

OUR RESULTS OUGHT TO LOOK DIFFERENT

The fruit of That Old Time Religion must look different than the fruit of the modern Church. There is no way for those that have experienced the presence and power of God to look the same as those that have not.

The result of our Churches must be more than wood, hay, and stubble that will burn in the fires of Godís judgment. There must be more than decisions; there must be disciples! The results of That Old Time Religion must be souls saved and lives changed.

We are all going to stand before the Lord to give an account; I want that to be a rewarding experience.

His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:23 Let me say one more time, GIVE ME THAT OLD TIME RELIGION!
