Book of Psalm 56
THE ENEMIES OF GODíS PEOPLE

Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil. They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul. Psalms 56:1-6

We find David in this Psalm speaking of his relationship to his enemies, but also about relationship to God. Those that have a close relationship with God can be sure that they will have some enemies. The enemies of David have the same characteristics as our enemies:

They Are Eager
Like the greedy predator that strikes swiftly at his prey, the enemies of the Godly are poised and ready to attack. It almost seems like an enraged animal. The enemies of the Godly are hot and eager in their hostility toward God and those that claim Him. The Christian needs to understand that his enemies are active and zealous, the allies of Satan are ready to display their position against us.

They Are Numerous
It seems that the wicked of our day have many followers, but the righteous have their foes. Itís hard to find those that will stand with us, but easy to find those that will oppose us.

They Are Constant
It seems they are ready every day; they never give up or rest. There seems to be new enemies every day; they are renewed by their zeal and their numbers. It is a truth that evil never rest; its activities are untiring.

They are Dishonest
Davidís enemies twisted his words and used them in a way that they were never meant to be used. That is the way the enemies of the righteous always do. They will take our words and use them to injure us. Good people are always exposed to misrepresentations and slander.

They Are Confederate
They Are Secret
They hide like cowards, waiting to ambush. Their intentions and designs are evil, crafty and cunning. The people of God must always be careful and on guard against the ďwiles of the Devil.Ē Satan himself is said to be able to transform himself into an angel of light. We must not get complacent; we must stay alert and watchful.

They Are Cruel
They will not be content with our silence; they want our ruin and our elimination. They want to deprive us of everything, our rights, our voice, even our life.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (1 Peter 5:8).

It is a foolish Christian that takes lightly the fact that he has an enemy. Every Godly person has many spiritual enemies that are seeking our ruin. It is of the utmost Importance that we be on guard, sober and vigilant. We must never forget our present danger and our need for the Lordís help and protection.

PRAYING FOR GODíS HELP

Be merciful unto me, O God... Psalms 56:1

Our Prayer Must Be A Comprehensive Petition For Divine Mercy

We must realize that if we get the help of God, we will need nothing more. I thank God for all the organizations and for all the individuals that are trying to help Christians and are trying to influence our cause, but the truth is; God is all we really need. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31

The problem is not with God; it is with our faith in Him as being all that we need. When we have Him, we have all the protection, all the guidance, and all the support we need. And we are assured of the exact victory we need.

Our Prayer Must Be A Powerful Plea For Divine Grace

As we ask for mercy and help from God, we must know that we are totally unworthy. Godís mercy and grace comes when self is out of the way. We do well when we call on the goodness of God, knowing that He alone is good and we have no goodness in ourselves. Because of His unspeakable generosity, He delights in giving mercy to us, the unworthy sinner. The world hates this teaching, but remember, they are our enemy, donít listen to them or be influenced by them.

Our Prayer Must Be An Earnest Appeal For Divine Justice

Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God. Psalms 56:7

The righteous ought to expect the wicked to be punished. Sure, we Preach that there is hope, but we are to never forget the wrath that awaits the unrepentant. The hope of the wicked is that they will escape the consequences of their wickedness by their own devices. We ought to know the truth and expect that those who reject the truth will be punished in their sin; they shall not escape. The words of David tell us that he was sure that the ungodly would not escape.

Not only should we expect Divine judgment upon the ungodly, we should desire it. David prayed for it. Their plans and their actions are to be defeated so the cause of Christ and His followers might be justified. Those that love God and righteousness ought to pray for wickedness to be overthrown.

THE COMFORT OF THE GODLY

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? (Psalms 56:8).

We Are Comforted Because God Knows Our Way

The pilgrimage of the child of God and all that we must face in this life are numbered and written in Godís book. It begins when we are saved. That is why it is important to know for sure that you are saved, you must know when your journey began. This journey may have some wanderings, some of them might even be sinful, but all of them are known to God. If our way is a spiritual way, then the solutions to the problems we face along our way must be spiritual solutions. The world tries to keep us in its way, then after we are saved, it tries to get us to return to its way. Our way is not a worldly way; itís a spiritual way. We got on this way through Christ and we face the problems of our way through Him.

Many of the steps of our journey are through places that we have never been before, some are very difficult steps. While we may not know about where our journey is leading us, God knows and He numbers every step. Many of our steps lead us into circumstances that are difficult and circumstances that we do not understand. Let us rest in the fact that He knows and understands, He has passed this way before, we can rest in Him.

We Are Comforted Because God Knows Our Sorrow - He Gathers Our Tears

What a great comfort to know that every tear is caught in Godís bottle.

He catches the tears of sorrow. God look with compassion on every broken heart. He hears the cried in the night and He is there every time a tear falls. Many times I have wept in the night, thinking I was all alone, but I was not alone, God was there, collecting every tear.

He catches the tears of sin. Sin is always grievous and always brings tears to the wayward child of God. It is a terrible and painful place to be, but thank God we are not there alone. He is there with His love, grace, mercy and forgiveness and His bottle to collect our tears. The God that loves the lost sinner, still loves the saved sinner. Tears of repentance always fall into Godís bottle.

He catches the tears of trouble. Job said that this life was full of trouble; the Bible says that the Godly will have trouble in this life. But as a father pities his children, our Heavenly Father knows all our afflictions and is waiting to catch our tears and extend His mercy. Again. I want to tell you that you are not alone in your trouble!

He catches the tears of trials. In the schoolhouse of our trials, the Lord is there. As we learn and grow in the Lord, one of the things we learn is that God is there to comfort us.

We Rejoice Because God Knows Us Personally

God knew us and gave His Son to die for us. God knows us now and hears us when we pray. God knows what we need, so He sends to Holy Spirit to dwell with us, lead us and comfort us. God knows what changes need to be made in our lives and He knows that many of those changes will not be welcomed by us, but His grace is sufficient.

He is our God, our Father and our friend. He acts in His great wisdom and goodness. His hand is in the trials of this life and we know that He does all things well. What He does in our lives may be painful at times, but it is always designed for our perfection. We have the great blessing of having access to the Throne of grace. We have the promises of God and that inspires hope and confidence in Him.

Let us rejoice in His comfort today.

THE CONFIDENCE OF THE CHRISTIAN

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Psalms 56:3-4

Our Confidence Must Always Be In God

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Psalms 56:3-4

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. Psalms 32:10

But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him. Psalms 37:39-40

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength: Isaiah 26:3-4

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8

Again, our trust must ALWAYS be in God!

Our trust must be in God, even in our trying times. There are many times in our lives that it seems that fear and hope are contrary to each other. It is hard to see how both can dwell in the same heart. But those that have a habit of trusting God in all things at all times, know that fear may dwell in our hearts from time to time, but hope always rules, because our trust is in Him. Trust in God raises us above our fears and it inspires us to praise God. In the midst of our troubles, trials, and conflicts, we can trust God, rise above our trouble and praise God. If nothing else happens, that is real victory for the Christian.

There are some requirements for truly trusting the Lord:

We Must Know The truths And Principles Of Godís Word. We must know that we are guilty sinners before God and can only approach His Throne, through the shed Blood of Jesus. He is our Mediator. Itís not ourselves, our religion, any religious leader like the Pope, or any other person or deed.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6).

We Must Fully Surrender Our Soul And Our Submit Our Will To Him. God has a right and always claims the right to hold first place in the heart of the Christian. This requirement is binding; His authority must be recognized. It is vain to say that we trust God and then not surrender or submit. Those that are always complaining and are never content in God can have no confidence in God. How can you trust in One that you do not have full confidence in? Our losses and sorrows are always painful, but our surrender and submission will lead us to trust in Him. Those that are fully surrendered and submitted will say, ďHere am I, Lord, do as it seemeth good to you.Ē

A PERSONAL OBSERVATION

My Pastor and I were talking yesterday and the subject of high gas prices came up. These days it seems to always come up in our daily conversations. People are in a panic as we see those prices rise. My Preacher made this statement; ďThe older folks in our Churches have seen gas prices at 35 cents a gallon and they know God has always taken care of them. Some have experienced the Great Depression and other very serious and trying times. They have been an inspiration to the younger generation for so many years. Now it seems that they are folding their faith and are in just as much a panic as everyone else.Ē To whom will our younger folks look today? Who will be the example of on that trusts the Lord?

I was reminded today that the Bible asks us a piercing question; ďIs anything too hard for the Lord?Ē What is your answer? Many are answering by the way they fret and doubt, and complain. While we are pointing our finger at the Oil Companies, and directing our anger at others, are we pointing our hearts toward God and directing our faith toward Him? I know these are difficult times, BUT GOD!

God can bring the gas prices down, if we trust him. God can help us even if they go higher, if we trust Him.

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Psalms 56:3-4

What brings us to a point that we are ready to trust God?

A Sense Of Guilt - When we see the sin that is in us, we are convicted. The remorse for our sin leads us to recall the time we trusted God for salvation, the rest we found in Him. We run back to the place where we fell at the foot of the cross, trusted in the Blood of Christ and discovered the joy of trusting in the mercy of God.

Temptation - Times of temptation are dark and lonely times. In those times we seek the presence and refuge of God.

Trials - Troubles can knock all the wind out of our sail and leave us at the mercy of the currents of the wicked and the world. When we feel helpless, we can trust the God of help.

Grief - The heart that is grieved is the heaviest to bear. That heart is in great danger of sinking into darkness, unless it turns to the Lord. In the most grievous times of our lives, when we may say with our own lips, there is nowhere to turn; those are the times when we ought to be driven to trust God.

Personal Afflictions - When the Christian faces these circumstances, he does not have to see them as judgments, he can see them as Fatherly chastisements, wounds that will heal, and we will be made better by them.

The Prospect Of Death - The most serious thoughts we have are the thoughts of death. Many times those thoughts bring us fear, but for the Christian, they produce trust.

The Advantages Of Trusting God

It Produces Evidence Of Our Faith - The lost are looking to the Christian for some evidence that you are different from others. Our trust in God can prove our faith more than anything else. Those that cannot debate Scripture can trust the God of the Scriptures and give clear evidence of their faith.

It Brings Peace And Satisfaction - Trusting God removes the fear and replaces it with the peace of God. It also satisfies the soul. While the rest of the world is filled with fear and bitterness, we have the peace and satisfaction of God because we trust in Him.

It Brings Help In Times Of Need Ė Praise God that many times our prayers are answered, but when they are not, Godís grace becomes sufficient. God promises deliverance for His people. One day we will stand and look back over our life and know He never failed us.

It Helps Us To See Our Trouble As Blessings - Even our crosses, if they come from the hand of a loving God, are nothing more than blessings in disguise.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28).

It Brings joy in The Present And Assures Us Of Eternal Joy - Just the fact that we are saved, brings us joy unspeakable and full of glory. But there is a promise beyond this life:

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. (Hebrews 4:9).

THE REJOICING OF THE CHRISTIAN

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. Psalms 56:8-9

We Rejoice Because Of The Love And Mercy Of God - David may have been bitterly persecuted, he may have been exiled, but he seemed to have the joy of the Lord and an attitude of victory. How could that be? It was because of his faith and his knowledge of the love and mercy of God. No matter where he had to go, no matter what his circumstances, he know that God loved him and that the mercy of God was available to him. He also knew that God would not forget him, Even his tears were placed in Godís bottle.

There are times when we weep because of the cares and sorrows of this life, but knowing that we are cared for and loved by God comforts us. Our every step is ordered and Divinely protected by Him. No tear that we shed is overlooked or forgotten, we can be sure that the God that saved us is the same God that knows all about us now and cares for us and will continue to do so. This gave David confidence and joy; it will do the same for us. Our God has abundant hope and consolation for every one of His children and in His love and mercy we can rejoice.

We Rejoice Because Of The Assurance Of Deliverance From God - How could he so boldly say, ďThis I know?Ē Because he knew that God was for him. God will come to the side of the Christian that prays and believes. He tells us to call on Him and He will answer and show Himself. Jesus tells the Christian to ask, believing. I expect God to help me, but I also know that I must ask, I must cry unto Him.

What power we have in God, the battle is won at the instant we cry unto Him.

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. (Isaiah 65:24).

The Devil trembles at the prayer of a believing Saint. There is not much trembling today because there is not much believing. God help us to know and believe that God is ready to help us when we call. David is not speaking in terms of hope, he speaks with assurance, ďThis I know!Ē There was only one reason that he could have such confidence. It was because he knew that God was for him. That is the greatest key to deliverance. Too many today are calling on a God that is not for them. He is not for the way they live, they way they pray, the way they worship, they way they serve, etc. Again, this is the key:

If God be for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31).

Thatís a big ďIF.Ē We can be assured of deliverance and victory, IF HE IS FOR US. That is why David could speak the words of verse four:

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. (Psalms 56:4).

If we have no doubt that God is for us, then we will have no fear of those that are against us

THE REJOICING OF THE CHRISTIAN - Continued

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living? Psalms 56:8-13

We Rejoice Because Of Our Confidence In Our Triumph In God - How can we help but to praise God when we compare His mighty power with the impotence of human flesh. To read of God in His Word, to cling to His promises and to experience His power in our lives ought to inspire us to praise. Again, even in the midst of our enemies and our trouble, the Godly can rejoice in God.

We Rejoice Because Of Our Delight In Our Obligations To God - God deliver us from the crybabies that are always whining about how hard the Christian life is, deliver us from those that complain about rules and call us legalists. God give us some faithful Christians that will rejoice and gladly proclaim that the vows of God are upon them. Letís not read over this too quickly, lest we fail to see that the man after Godís own heart was a great man because he saw his obligations to God as a privilege and a pleasure. He did not complain or look for a loophole; he celebrated his obligations to God with a song.

David realized that one of the most important obligations he had was to praise that thank God. Every Christian needs to have that view:

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

David had vowed to thank God and he looked forward to fulfilling that vow. The thankless complainers that fill our pews today will never see deliverance and victory in their lives. They donít want to pay for it. The cost is not that great, but it is specific. Even while David was singing a song of lamentation because of his trials, he thought of songs of praise and thanksgiving.

The first reason we are obligated to God is because of what He has done for us. There are some that rebel at this thought, they are always saying that we ought not to feel obligation to God. How can we not feel obligated to Him? He saved us, He sealed us and He satisfies us. He delivered our soul from death, He promises that we will never lose it and He gives us victory in this life. The lost may not feel obligated, but every saved person is obligated to God for what He has done for them.

We are also obligated to God for what He will do for us in the future. What God has done for us gives us the assurance that He will do the same in the future. God help that bunch that says that God saved them, but will not keep them saved. God help Baptist that have no confidence in the God of their salvation.

We are also obligated to God for His design in what He does for us. While this world walks in darkness, we have a God that makes us to walk in His glorious light. I rejoice in the fact that I can walk before God and enjoy His life, His favor and His protection. I donít want what some have, a life with no obligation to the Good God of Heaven. Our obligation to Him is not grievous; it is a source of singing, praise and thanksgiving. When our heart is trusting in God, we will be glad, strengthened and encouraged in Him.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? (Psalms 56:8).

THE STATE OF THE CHRISTIAN

For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living? Psalms 56:13

The lost person is spiritually dead, but we have been made alive by God. We were born-again, we have eternal life, we have abundant life and we will never die.

It was made possible by Christ
It was paid for by His Blood
It was administered by the Holy Spirit
It was given to us by grace, through faith

What a wonderful state, what a wonderful God that would deliver such a state.

There is great danger for the Christian, but the Lord sustains us: He gives us strength in temptation, gives us confidence in our fight, gives is encouragement in our disappointments and gives us help in our troubles.

We have a life governed by God
We have a life illuminated by God
We have a life ruled by God
We have a life blessed by God

With all of that before us, let us join in the song of the Godly man:

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Psalms 56:4

In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. Psalms 56:10

In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. Psalms 56:11
