Daily in the Psalms 47

book of psalm 47

O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph. For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth. He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet. He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah. God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding. God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness. The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted. Psalms 47:1-9

There is one great reason for us to praise the Lord; He is the absolute ruler of this world. But there are some more specific reasons the Psalmist names:

Because Of His Majesty And Power

The Lord is exalted far above the noblest being on this earth. He is Most High, He is over all and He should be reverenced by all. When He dealt with the enemies of His people, he showed Himself “Terrible.” Because of His high nobility and His mighty power, every man ought to stand in awe of Him. Too often we try to present God as the nice man upstairs, when the truth is, the enemies of God ought to see His justice and power as terrible. There is no reason for the enemies of the Church to fear the soft, get-along-with-everyone god of modern religion.

Because Of The Scope Of His Rule

God reigns over the heathen
He reigns over kings and princes
He can bring the mightiest man to nothing
He makes the wisest judge on earth bow in shame
He is in control of the affairs of the whole earth
He is Supreme
He commands the darkness and evil of the earth
The light and all things good originate in Him
There is no part of the earth that His hand cannot reach
He has established His throne in Heaven and His Kingdom rules over all
All things are ruled or overruled by Him for the accomplishment of His perfect will
Even the wickedness of sin and the Devil himself is under His control to work His perfect plan Satan is but a tool is His grand scheme

Therefore, let us praise Him!

The Lord is the absolute ruler of this world. Today we continue with the specific reasons the Psalmist names that we should praise Him:

Because We Are Secure Under His Rule

So many times the nation of Israel had witnessed this first hand. Their foes were defeated before their eyes and they neither shot an arrow or struck a blow. All they had to do was walk among the defeated and gather the spoils. The way the Psalmist speaks of God’s mighty works indicate the ease of which it was done. In most cases, He simply spoke and it was accomplished. It also speaks of the completeness of His works. We have the record of God’s people approaching the camp of the enemy and finding their enemies dead; none escaped!

God did not just give them a piece of land; He gave them the Holy Land, a land flowing with milk and honey. They did not chose it, He did. He enabled them to take possession of it. He enabled them to protect their possession or when they could not, He guarded it for them without any effort on their part. This land would have been the pride of Jacob, a land he would have rejoiced to dwell in and have as his possession. All that they needed was in that land:

For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey; A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. Deuteronomy 8:7-9

God always takes special care of those that love Him and follow Him. He promised that, “No weapon formed against us shall prosper.” Who is able to harm us, if we follow God? He said, “All things work together for good to them that love Him.” He also said, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” We have the most powerful reasons for praising God!

The Lord is the absolute ruler of this world. Today we continue with the specific reasons the Psalmist names that we should praise Him:

Because Of His Holiness

He has the right to reign! He is the Greatest, He is the Highest, and He is the Mightiest. He created and sustains all things On the grounds of His absolute authority, He cannot be matched or defeated.

All of His laws are true and just and are designed to abolish error and evil and to establish righteousness and truth forever! The ultimate aim of God and all His dealings with man is to bless us as we turn from sin unto holiness.

As men yield in loyal obedience to His commands, God grants them holiness, peace, and joy. It is the will of God that all men everywhere yield willingly to Him as Lord and King and be completely and wholly blessed. The obedient have great reason to praise Him.

Because Of His Success

There is no reason for us to fear or fret; the plan and purpose of God will be gloriously accomplished.
He will speak peace to the heathen
He shall reign from sea to sea, from the river to the ends of the earth
He is the rightful and sovereign Lord over all the mighty ones of this earth
All power belongs to Him
He and His throne are greatly exalted
He shall succeed indeed and all men shall enjoy the blessings of His success
The time is fast approaching when all people from all lands will gladly respond to the call of the Psalmist to praise the Lord.

We Are To Praise Him Enthusiastically

Like soldiers on the field of battle after a great victory, let us praise our King with great enthusiasm, with the clapping of hands, with the shout of triumph, and the voice of song. This is a call for celebration and joy. We must never try to worship Him with a measured, cold, and heartless worship. He alone is worthy of our highest praise!

We Are To Praise His Intelligently

The praise to our king must be intelligent and instructive. Every song and every word of praise is to express who He is and what He has declared.

…I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 1Corinthians 14:15

Our praises must edify the Church and draw men to Him. It must be more than mere emotion; it must be intelligent. Much of the praise of the modern Church is silly and ignorant. That is because they don’t know the Book or the One that wrote it. Praise that draws attention to man or the flesh is wicked.

Are we praising or rebelling against the control of God? Fleshly and ignorant praise seeks to take the control away from God and give it to man. Every sinner needs to consider the wickedness of his rebellion toward the God that controls everything.

Every man must yield to Him to be saved or they will be crushed by His power and wrath. That same yielding must take place in our praise. Let us praise Him enthusiastically and intelligently today.

He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah. Psalms 47:4

It Is His Choice Because We Dare Not Trust Ourselves

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9

The possibility of good and evil are both within every man and the extent is known only to God. If the choice were left to us, we might choose that which would defile the good within us and bring to the surface the evil. Left to ourselves we are prone to bring about ruin instead of righteousness. Only God truly understand our hearts

Because we can’t tell what will happen in the future, we make our choices for the present. But what may seem wise and good for today may bring evil in the days to come. Man will always choose the pleasant rather than the painful. He will always choose the bright rather than the dark. But only God knows if the painful and the dark will be good for us and may be necessary for our wellbeing.

It Is His Choice Because We Trust Him

The true Christian will always submit freely to the choosing of God because our confidence is in Him. His understanding is infinite and He is the Only Wise God. He cannot make a mistake. Being assured that God is good, all the time is the only way we can commit the choices of our inheritance to Him. Before we can truly trust Him in everything, we have to know in our hearts that He knows our every need and He cares about us. We are always in His sight and He has promised never to leave or forsake us.

He chooses for us as He chose for Jacob, that we might rejoice in Him. The One that bestows the inheritance is the One that chooses it. It was He that chose our present spiritual inheritance; pardon, purity, peace, grace, etc. He said that He would withhold no good thing from us. Because of the good and perfect choices he has made for us in this present life, it is hard to even imagine what awaits us in the future. He has chosen an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, and fadeth not away. And one day soon, He will bestow that blessed inheritance upon us. How could we not praise our Wise and Gracious God thankfully and gladly for ordering the affairs of our life now and in the future?
